2012 festival cancelled due to economic climate
The Windermere Air Festival 2012 has been cancelled due to the current economic climate and consequent lack of grant funding and sponsorship revenue that was previously available to it.Bluestone Events will no longer run the event, having helped organise it in 2010 and been responsible for its delivery in 2011. The Windermere Air Festival was run for the first time as a commercial entity in 2011.Although this year's event was hailed as a success, with ongoing uncertainty in the economy, the event's funding sources have been squeezed even further, with the probability that if it were to go ahead next year, organisers could face a substantial loss or be forced to pass on untenably high costs to festival visitors.Kate Thomas of Bluestone Events, said: "It is with regret that Bluestone Events has been forced to withdraw from the Windermere Air Festival but the prevailing economic climate has made it impossible for us to stage the event in 2012, as the risk it would pose to our business would simply be too great. We would support anyone wishing to take on the running of the event in the future when the economic climate has improved."We would like to thank the Rotary Club and everyone who has supported us and the event. The Windermere Air Festival is a great event and we are proud to have been involved in it over the last two years."Pat Crowfoot, President of the Rotary Club of Windermere, which organised the first 10 Air Shows said: "I would like to thank Bluestone Events for making a success of this year's Windermere Air Festival. Without their involvement, it simply wouldn't have taken place, as the Air Festival has grown too big for a voluntary service organisation like ours to undertake. The Rotary Club hopes that when economic conditions have improved that a private company will re-launch the Windermere Air Festival, with the goal of making it better than ever."
Thousands Raised for Charity
The 2011 Windermere Air Festival can proudly announce a heart warming £10,650 was raised for local and military charities over the festival weekend. The Festival has always been deeply rooted in its charitable aims and this year was no exception with 32 different charities represented on site. The official charity of the festival was The Rotary Club of Windermere who had another successful year for their organisation without having to take on the financial risk of running the show as in previous years. The Rotary took away a fantastic £6,000 from the weekend, all which will be put towards worthy causes in the area including the Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team and local youth projects. The Windermere Air Festival asked the Rotary to provide volunteers for the weekend, the charity was then paid for their man hours, they also received a large proportion of the money taken from the festival Car Park on top of running the children's games on the Air Base and the usual bucket shaking. Air Festival Director Kate Thomas commented 'By involving and working with the Rotary in this way, it means we can ensure the charity takes home a substantial amount regardless of anything else. The Air Festival is only possible with many hands on deck over the weekend and it's great to be able to guarantee the money budgeted for this goes straight to a well respected local charity.'David Thomas of the Rotary comments 'This really is a wonderful amount of money raised from the Air Festival which we can invest in our local community, having stepped back from organizing the event we're very pleased to see it's charitable aims are still at the core of the Festival. We happily gave our time to help over the weekend as this event is very special to us and are looking forward to seeing how the festival will continue to grow in future years'.The Festival also welcomed back various charities who have been attending the event for many years. The military based charities, including the RAF Association, were an integral part of the ever popular military village with over £2,000 raised between these organisations over the weekend. Lucy Bennett, a Partner at Bluestone Events who organised the Air Festival this year, says 'We're delighted such a substantial amount has been raised as a result of the 2011 Air Festival. The community and charity aspects of the event are so important as it's such a positive way for the Air Festival to contribute to the community. We intend to really develop the community involvement for 2012 to really highlight everything the area has to offer visitors. We would like to thank all the visitors and local businesses who supported the event for their generosity in contributing to this fantastic sum for charity.'The Windermere Air Festival is a unique event with such a stunning backdrop, pilots simply love displaying in the Lake District and are already looking forward to 2012's event. The festival has undergone many changes this year to ensure it is around for future generations to enjoy. This years festival encompassed a stunning weekend of aerobatic displays, historical nostalgia mixed in with the RAF's most advanced pilots and aircraft. The ground entertainment highlighted the amazing variety of local groups and entertainment in the area and really was enjoyed by all who went.
Festival weekend pulls in the crowds
The 2011 Windermere Air Festival, which took place last weekend, was a great success with some 40,000 people descending on Bowness-on-Windermere to enjoy a weekend of entertainment and air displays. It is estimated that the event generated millions of pounds for the local economy. The Windermere Air Festival is a unique event with a stunning backdrop, pilots simply love displaying in the Lake District and are already hoping to display at 2012's event. The festival has undergone many changes this year designed to ensure it is sustained for future generations to enjoy. This year's festival encompassed a stunning weekend of aerobatic displays, historical nostalgia mixed in with the RAF's most advanced pilots and aircraft, the ground entertainment highlighted the amazing variety of local groups and entertainment in the area and was enjoyed by all who attended.Local company Bluestone Events managed the festival for the first time this year, having been approached to do so by the Rotary Club of Windermere, who had previously run the event on a charitable basis, no longer being in a position to do so. Rather than having to cancel the event, the Rotary Club wanted to ensure it was able to continue. Having previously been involved in the festival in a voluntary capacity, Bluestone Events, a small local business based in Kendal, was determined to keep the festival going and stepped in with the intention of securing its future. The event faced many challenges this year and will continue to do so in future years, however we hope the stunning displays by the Red Arrows, the roar of the Vulcan and the 12 other aerobatic displays will stay with you and bring you back to Bowness in years to come.A big thank you to all our visitors, supporters and local businesses who help to make this event a success.
The Mighty Vulcan returns
With only moments to spare Windermere Air Festival organisers can confirm that the mighty Avro Vulcan XH558 will be making a welcome return to Windermere this weekend for the 11th Air Festival. The magnificent aircraft last wowed visitors back in 2009 and has been a major talking point of the Air Festival ever since. The Vulcan will be performing a full nine minute display over the stunning backdrop of Lake Windermere on Saturday 23rd July. The Vulcan display is only possible courtesy of Aerobytes, a world-leading aero software provider, who stepped forward following a heartfelt sponsorship plea by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust and the Air Festival organisers on Monday. Kate Thomas, one of the Air Festival directors says ' it's amazing news that we've managed to confirm the Vulcan so close to the event, the Vulcan to the Sky Trust have been working tirelessly to make this happen. We can't thank them and Aerobytes enough, the Vulcan is a major crowd pleaser and it's such a fantastic addition to an already busy line-up this weekend.'The Avro Vulcan XH558 was built in 1960 and went on to serve for an astonishing 33 years before finishing her flying career in 1993. The Vulcan returned to flight on 18th October 2007 following an award winning £7million restoration programme. As the last airworthy Vulcan, she returned triumphantly to the air display circuit in 2008 and has been a significant crowd puller at every show at which she has since appeared. The flight display of the Vulcan XH558 celebrates its extraordinarily advanced British design and technology, and looks to highlight importance in the context of The Cold War. The aircraft has gracefully curved leading edges adding to its 34-metre delta wingspan, making a beautiful, instantly recognisable British design. The Vulcan will be roaring across the Windermere skies on Saturday with seven other dazzling air displays, including the RAF Falcons parachute display team and the Breitling Wing Walkers. Sunday boasts another great day of displays with the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster Bomber taking part in the Battle of Britain memorial flight and the world-renowned Red Arrows taking to the skies.

Asked how the Airshow went David Thomas, Airshow Director, said “I was over the moon to see so many people enjoying themselves and to know that about 30 charities attending will reap the benefit, entirely due to support from over 200 sponsors and the hard work of Rotarians and Bluestone Events, who jointly organised the show”
10th Anniversary of the Windermere Airshow
Asked how the Airshow went David Thomas, Airshow Director, said “I was over the moon to see so many people enjoying themselves and to know that about 30 charities attending will reap the benefit, entirely due to support from over 200 sponsors, without whom Rotary could not put it on.”An estimated 40,000 crowd enjoyed the two day spectacle despite the organisers, The Rotary Club of Windermere, saying that they lost all flying displays on Saturday, due to drizzle and low cloud. The non stop activities and events on the Showground at Bowness kept the crowd entertained on Saturday, with Sunday visitors having a hectic day to see and do everything on the ground as well as enjoying the very full flying programme.
